Below is Island Lake on the Bearthooth Highway. My wife and I camped here in early July at a National Forest Campground. Primitive. Pit toilets, no electricity, no showers and you've gotta pump your own water. Also the nearest grocery is in Red Lodge, many miles away by winding highway. When we arrived here, much of the ground was still covered with snow from winter. It was rapidly melting and providing moisture for the mosquitoes, which were abundant. On the plus side, the snowbanks made fine iceboxes for beverages and other canned items. However, you can't leave food out like bacon, or steaks as this is bear country -- actually grizzly country -- and you don't want a grizzly as a visitor.

Below is a view of Beartooth Mountain after which the range and the highway is named. The name was given to the mountain by the Indians.
